Try this fruit tart to celebrate National Cherry Tart Day

Try this fruit tart to celebrate National Cherry Tart Day

June 18 is National Cherry Tart Day, and I have an easy recipe to share with you to help you celebrate the day deliciously!

Grab some pre-made pie crust dough if you don't have time to make your own; it works just as well!

Mama Steph’s rustic fruit galette

For the crust:

1 1/4 cup flour

1 1/2 teaspoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

4 oz (1/2 cup, 1 stick, 8 Tbsp) butter, cut into small (1/2-inch) cubes, chilled in freezer at least 15 minutes, preferably an hour

4 to 6 Tbsp ice water

(tip: if you’re pressed for time, use a pastry crust from the refrigerator section; that’s what I used and what you see in the picture! It’s delicious; however, if you have time, it’s fun to try to make  your own crust.)

For the filling:

2-3 peaches, peeled and sliced into thin wedges

1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries, cherries, blackberries, or other favorite fruit

3 TBS sugar

Staples announces feral hog abatement grant

Staples announces feral hog abatement grant

From the office of Commissioner Todd Staples:

— In an ongoing effort to protect Texans from the costly destruction caused by feral hogs, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples today announced the Texas Department of Agriculture is accepting grant applications to assist regional efforts to control feral hog populations. Grant funds are made available through TDA’s new County Hog Abatement Matching Program, or CHAMP.

“The feral hog population has exploded in the last 20 years, and our ability to control this will depend on two primary factors,” Commissioner Staples said. “First, our efforts must be coordinated across all public entities and private landowners. Second, we must focus on the most low-cost, high-return methods when investing limited taxpayer dollars into this effort. The CHAMP grant accomplishes both of these by building on the successes of recent initiatives.

Summertime pool safety for you and your children

Summertime pool safety for you and your children

From the Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas:

Swimming is one of the most popular activities during summer weather, and many choose to purchase a home swimming pool as it can bring years of family fun and could serve as permanent improvement to your property. Keep in mind, however, that each year thousands of American families confront tragedies at the swimming pool. BBB reminds owners to make safety a priority when planning and using a swimming pool.

“About one in five people who die from drowning are children younger than 14 years of age;  for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries”, said Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas. “That’s why it’s so important for pool owners to take proactive measures to ensure a fun and safe swimming pool experience this summer.”

Current version of GED test to expire at end of year

Current version of GED test to expire at end of year

From Panola College:

Today, Panola College announced that the current version of the GED test will expire at the end of 2013.  The current version, known as the 2002 Series GED test, will be replaced with the new 2014 GED test on January 2, 2014.

Those who have taken the 2002 Series GED test, but not passed all five parts, have until the end of 2013 to pass or they will need to start over again in 2014 with the new GED test in order to receive their high school credential.

“The GED test opens doors to college, better jobs, and the satisfaction of earning a high school credential,” said Stacy Gee, Testing Coordinator of Panola College.  “So we want to be sure that everyone is aware of this deadline.  GED test-takers must act now to finish and pass before the current test expires.”
